I flew with the 2/20th ARA, 1st Cav and was in the area when Lt Hick's aircraft went in. I also knew Paul and always enjoyed what I remember as a pleasant smile that seemed to be ever present. I had several combined missions with the Guns during the time they were attached to the 1st Cav. They were a great bunch of folks and I always enjoyed our missions together. I had known most of the pilots in the states so it was almost like old home week when we got together. Thanks for remembering them and keep up the good work. |

I got to see the Gun ships up close which was very impressive. One got shot down over by the 11th Cav right after it got in country. It didn't have serious damage so they flew it out after some repairs. I also remember the blde strike at Vung Tou. |

Record 31 Name: Bob Lamarre Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Maine Time: 1999-06-14 17:52:57 Comments: I was with 147th from Apr.67 to Apr.68 I was a door gunner and flew many missions in the "CHINOOK". What a work horse. I can't begin to tell of all the things that were hung to the belly of the chinooks. I think the chinooks could have moved the whole country (literally) and the pilots could have dropped it where ever they wanted it on a dime. |

Record 28 Name: Wilson Hubbell Website: Referred by: Net Search From: Santa Barbara, CA Time: 1999-06-01 18:30:14 Comments: I did Direct Support Maintenance on "Easy Money", "VC Birth Control" and "Cost of Living" (which I remember being named "Guns-a-Go-Go", just as the entire unit was, but I guess I'm wrong...?). These three aircraft ALL had distinctive nose art and maintenance priority over all other Chinooks in the Cav - and we did blade replacements, transmission replacements, rotor head replacements and other major jobs outdoors in the mud, rain, heat dust, etc., of the Central Highlands. What made the job particularly tough was removing all the special HEAVY armor plating these ships carried so that we could do certain maintenance functions. The Guns-A-Go-Go aircraft routinely tested their armament systems just outside the wire of our base camp at An Khe. It was an awesome sight to see them open up with everything they had. It would be interesting to find a Vietnamese who was on the receiving end of a Guns-A-Go-Go gun run to hear what that experience was like - assuming that any survived... |
